When I first saw the DogPedic Sleep System I thought the company who had produced it had gone barking mad (pun intended).  Now I know we all love our pets and sometimes get over indulgent  treating them as though they were human.  But please a memory foam bed for a dog that’s insane isn’t it?

After all they’re dogs aren’t they?  And aren’t dogs designed to sleep on the floor? Therefore why would you want to buy them a mattress, a memory foam mattress that’s designed for your dogs ultimate comfort and support no less?

I thought at first I was going to give this DogPedic Review a very negative slant but then I noticed what my dogs were doing.

I have an ancient Bernese mountain dog who’s eight years old and a two-year-old Rottweiler bitch. The Rottie Kira was  sitting in my favourite armchair and my Bernese Max had scratched up his vet bed to make a more comfortable place to sleep.

Now some people would tell you that Kira was sleeping in my comfy armchair because that was my place and because I’m Alpha in our household (with the dogs anyway) she was showing dominant behaviour lying in my place.  Now that may be partly true but I have to say she did look more comfortable in the armchair then she did lying on the floor.

I’m not one of those people who believes dogs are humans.  Dogs are dogs and will do it doggie things.  But I can certainly relate to a dog who wants to find a comfy place to sleep.

Now the sales literature waxes lyrically about how:

• It’s a memory foam bed
• Conforms to your dogs body
• The mattress supports your dogs overall weight
• It can relieve the pain from arthritis and hip displasia
• The mattress never loses it’s shape
• Comes with a water proof liner and soft suede cover
• It’s machine washable
• Has a non slip  underside

When you consider how easy the mattress is to clean and how easily it can be stored out of the way if you have a spare $40 then I believe this product will do what it says and that’s to give your dog a comfortable place to sleep off the ground.

I’m almost tempted to buy two of the large mattresses for myself  after all it is a lot cheaper than buying human versions which cost many hundreds of dollars!

The Pet Zoom sonic pet Trainer is another dog training device along the same lines as Bark Off.  This type of product seems to have sparked a number of look alike sonic dog training aids.  The pet zoom is aimed more towards training your pet than stopping it barking.

The pet zoom claims it’s safe and effective, causes the dog no pain,has a 20 foot range, humans can’t hear it and it can be used on both cats and dogs.

The sales video shows dogs and cats behaving badly the pet zoom is pointed at them, activated and we see the inappropriate behaviour ceases.

The normal use of a sonic deterrents of this type is in barking prevention.  When the dog barks an inaudible (to humans) high-pitched noise is emitted which annoys a dog sensitive hearing.  When the dog stops barking the noise stops and over time the dog is conditioned to avoid barking so as to avoid the annoying noise.

With this type of device there is a lot of evidence to suggest that as a barking deterrent it is highly effective.

When used to try and prevent inappropriate behaviour from a dog or cat things aren’t so straightforward.  When using a deterrent of this type timing is everything.  If we don’t time the application of the sonic device at exactly the right time the dog or cat can’t associate its bad behaviour with the annoying noise.  In fact it could have the exact opposite effect of what you were hoping for.  This type of device like a shock collar if used at all should only be used by an expert in dog behaviour.

My guess is this is more of a novelty item and I believe unless used correctly will just be relegated to the junk draw in the kitchen after a few days.
